Nuclear star formation in the quasar PG 1126 − 041 from adaptive optics assisted spectroscopy ⋆

چکیده

We present adaptive optics assisted spectroscopy of three quasars obtained with NACO at VLT. The high angular resolution achieved with the adaptive optics (∼ 0.08), joined to the diagnostic power of near-IR spectroscopy, allow us to investigate the properties of the innermost 100 pc of these quasars. In the quasar with the best adaptive optics correction, PG1126−041, we spatially resolve the Paα emission within the nuclear 100 pc. The comparison with higher excitation lines suggests that the narrow Paα emission is due to nuclear star formation. The inferred intensity of the nuclear star formation (13 M⊙ yr−1) may account for most of the far-IR luminosity observed in this quasar.

On the Role of the Environments and Star Formation for Quasar Activity

We investigate the host galaxy and environment properties of a sample of 400 low z (<0.5) quasars that were imaged in the SDSS Stripe82. We can detect and study the properties of the host galaxy for more than 75% of the data sample. We discover that quasar are mainly hosted in luminous galaxies of absolute magnitude M − 3 < M(R) < M∗1 and that in the quasar environments the galaxy number densit...

Cosmic Evolution of Star Formation in Sdss Quasar Hosts since Z=1

We present Spitzer IRS observations of a complete sample of 57 SDSS type-1 quasars at z ∼ 1. Aromatic features at 6.2 and/or 7.7 μm are detected in about half of the sample and show profiles similar to those seen in normal galaxies at both lowand high-redshift, indicating a star-formation origin for the features. Based on the ratio of aromatic to star-formation IR (SFIR) luminosities for normal...

The Relation between Quasar and Merging Galaxy Luminosity Functions and the Merger-induced Star Formation Rate of the Universe

Using a model for the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in mergers involving gas-rich galaxies, we study the relationship between quasars and the population of merging galaxies and, as a consequence, predict the merger-induced star formation rate density of the Universe. These mergers drive nuclear inflows of gas, fueling starbursts and “buried” quasar activity until feedback en...

Modeling Laser Guide Star Aberrations

When using a laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics system, quasi-static aberrations are observed between the measured wavefronts from the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) and the natural guide star WFS. We model these LGS aberrations. c © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (010.1080) Adaptive optics;(010.7350) Wave-front sensing.

Ultra low-mass star and substellar formation in σ Orionis

The nearby young σ Orionis cluster (∼360 pc, ∼3 Ma) is becoming one of the most important regions for the study of ultra low-mass star formation and its extension down to the mass regimes of the brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects. Here, I introduce the σ Orionis cluster and present three studies that the JOVIAN group is developing: a pilot programme of near-infrared adaptive-optics imaging...
